Nitrocellulose alternatives
by Sun Chemical

Sun Chemical has expanded its portfolio of nitrocellulose alternatives specifically for flexible packaging applications to help converters, retailers and consumer goods manufacturers navigate changing market dynamics and stricter packaging regulations.

Nitrocellulose (NC) is used in solvent-based printing inks and coatings, but its thermal instability during high-temperature recycling causes odours, discolouration and contamination that compromise the quality of the recyclate and limit its reuse options. Sun Chemical offers a broad portfolio of NC-alternative printing inks, coatings, primers and adhesives that provide solutions for surface printing, laminate printing and other multi-purpose options. In addition, the modular system based on polyurethane (PU) concentrates enables converters to make a smooth transition from NC/PU inks to NC-free alternatives, according to the manufacturer.

The portfolio offers advantages for processors of flexible and multi-layer packaging made of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), especially for users in the areas of chilled foods (such as dairy products, cheese and yoghurt), frozen foods, detergents, confectionery, bread bags and horticulture.

Mehran Yazdani, President of Packaging at Sun Chemical, comments: “Our NC alternative solutions offer customers a clear path to sustainable growth. By mitigating supply risks, increasing efficiency and supporting end-of-life recycling goals, we provide our customers with the solutions they need to meet the changing demands of brands, retailers and regulators without compromising on quality or safety. This expanded portfolio reflects Sun Chemical’s long-term investment in innovation, expertise and collaboration with converters to deliver value beyond ink and empower them to “experience transformation”.
