Large format printing:
Durst P5 SMP

The Durst Group, a leading manufacturer of digital printing and production technologies, has unveiled its new multi-pass solution, the P5 SMP, in Lienz, Austria.

The P5 SMP is a hybrid LED multi-pass inkjet system designed for sheet-fed and roll-fed printing. The system is based on the proven P5 platform and, according to Durst, offers a powerful alternative to conventional single-pass printing systems. Durst enlisted the Austrian company ARIAN GmbH, a service provider for POS campaigns and a global full-service provider, to conduct the field test.

Robert Posch, Chief Production Officer at ARIAN, emphasised that the system impresses with its flexibility and reliability. ‘We tested over 200 materials in a wide variety of formats on the P5 SMP. The short set-up times and high degree of automation help us to handle this mix of materials in practice. With the P5 SMP, we have also expanded our production capacities and can thus respond more quickly to customer enquiries – a decisive success factor in sales today,’ said Posch.

Christoph Gamper, CEO of the Durst Group, emphasised that, together with ARIAN, they had fully exploited the potential of the P5 SMP in practice and brought the system to market maturity with feedback from a real production environment. “The response to the P5 SMP from existing and potential customers has been overwhelming. We were already able to record further sales during the event. The P5 SMP is a real game changer that takes productivity and efficiency in large-format digital printing to a new level.”

The P5 SMP can process roll and sheet materials up to 70 mm thick. According to the manufacturer, another highlight is the high-precision ‘Digital Substrate Alignment’ digital image registration, which is particularly useful for double-sided printing applications. In addition, the Automated Corrugated System ensures that the material is automatically guided flat to prevent the edges from standing up and to avoid material collisions. Depending on the application, the P5 SMP can control up to ten colour channels.
